This is my first pastel portrait of Samantha and her first long term pose at Hipbone Studio in Portland, Oregon. I finished this drawing in two sessions, it’s done in Nupastels on unfamiliar paper that a student traded me for my traditional Stonehenge.

I’ve had too much coffee today and I’ve been thinking about figure drawing, finding my voice as a painter and what’s lead me to the series I’m doing now. I started working with the figure seriously about a year after I’d moved to Portland, back in 2002. I was teaching Illustration at PNCA and I’d gone out for a walk…

Saturday found me groggy and out of any deep browns to use on my sketches of Trisha. I’d drawn her before, in pen but never with pastel. I even had a good time on the dreaded “Kneecap, Nipple, Nostril” reclining pose. I’ve missed the one with the hat. I’ll add it in when I remember where I put it. [fb_like]

I’m teaching a pastel seminar in March at Hipbone Studio so I’ve dropped the pen and sketchbook for the time being and picked up the pastel. I spent Thursday and Friday at Dee Vadnais’ house in Deer Island with Quin Sweetman, Erik Sandgren, Gretchen Vadnais and Kathryn Cotnoir drawing one of my favorite models, Samantha Beasley.
