Model Marathon Man

There was another Model Marathon at Hipbone Studio this past Sunday, number 52. I stopped by Muse Art+Design and picked up a new sketchbook, this time with a soft cover. There were 9 models for 9 hours, I drew eight of them. My favorites were the first and last models with the second one running a close second. I wish Olive had gotten the chance to do some gestures. All You Sisters

It’s been my pleasure to work with a model named Samantha Beasley (Sister Thyme) as both an inspiration for my abstract work as well as my figure drawings. I made these from Samantha’s début at Hipbone Studio. I’m collaborating with her on a book called Sister Thyme, my drawings of her coupled with her musings on art and modeling. A couple of pages are featured below.

I’m starting a couple of books with Ariel and Sister Thyme and I’ve switched back to ink to make them. These are drawings made at Hipbone over the last several weeks featuring Zach, Casey, Johnny and leah. Ink on paper from my sketchbooks.

Retrospective

I’ve had too much coffee today and I’ve been thinking about figure drawing, finding my voice as a painter and what’s lead me to the series I’m doing now. I started working with the figure seriously about a year after I’d moved to Portland, back in 2002. I was teaching Illustration at PNCA and I’d gone out for a walk after a matinee at the Lauelhurst. I passed by Hipbone Studio, in those days it was in a storefront on Ankeny, looked at the work in the window and decided to stop in with my newsprint pad. I’d done figure drawing before in the odd class here and there, taught it a few times at my college and The Portfolio Center but never had the chance to do figure drawing on a weekly basis. I drew there a couple of times and at PNCA and I got hooked.

Here’s a gallery of some of those early drawing, most were on newsprint and are lost. The klunkers are here along with the keepers. I’ve heard it said moe than once that it takes about 10,000 hours to master anything. Looking back at these drawings, I believe that’s the truth.

Deer Island and Sister Thyme

I spent Thursday and Friday at Dee Vadnais’ house in Deer Island with Quin Sweetman, Erik Sandgren, Gretchen Vadnais and Kathryn Cotnoir drawing one of my favorite models, Samantha Beasley. There was snow on the ground, wonderful food and excellent company. Thanks to everyone and special thanks to Dee for getting this together and to Samantha for her inspiring work. A Not So Snowy Day

It was supposed to snow yesterday here in Portland, Oregon. People tend to panic when that happens and Hipbone had a light crowd for both sessions. I was in a cartoony mood and had a great time drawing Elona in her hat, her boots and on a bicycle, sans the bicycle. Paula was the second model. She brought HER hat, her banjo and her great curls. It was a good time and let me practice my pastels for my upcoming workshop. Seats are still available.

Sivonna at Hipbone

I’m teaching a pastel seminar in March at Hipbone Studio so I’ve dropped the pen and sketchbook for the time being and picked up the pastel. I shot these with my iPhone on location, hence the color and the weird shadows. The model today was Sivonna, a woman my friend James told me about. He sketched her lips on a napkin while he explained her slight overbite. “It’s very hard to catch just right.” he said. He’s right, I never caught it, though I did catch the glow in her skin. I’d like to do some more work with Sivonna in the future.

From my Sketchbook

As most of you know and if you read this blog enough, I keep a sketchbook with me that I take to drawing sessions 3–4 times a week here in Portland. Here are some drawings from the past week or so, done at Hipbone, The Art Institute and at my studio, Fishtank. The modelas are Becky (in the dress), Kristin, the lovely Martha and the amazing Samantha Beasley, holder of the best joints and the most graceful lines I’ve seen in quite some time. The sketches are ink on paper in various sizes.

Wednesday at Hipbone with Tess and Lauren H. I bumped into my friend Julie whom I have not seen in years and met Brin Levinson and Joff, both friends of Roxanne Patruznick. Some of my favorite artists here in Portland. Lauren sported pink hair and fishnet hose. Hipbone is getting more Portlandia.
